CAD Hybrid modeling is the future. It will lead the way to 3D CAD
standardization. We will soon be using a mixture of 2D/3D wireframe design,
with flexible free form and precision surfacing and morphing and integrated
history and direct editing solid modeling to do limitless design. Here is a
video showing that that future is here today. With 3D CAD Hybrid modeling
there is no such thing as “Legacy Data”This is a great presentation showing the integration of surface and solid modeling using the same basic commands. This allows ZW3D to be a fully functional standalone surfacing package like Alias, Rhino and other advanced surface only packages. But adds the flexibility of easily turning them into functional solid models ready for the integrated manufacturing in ZW3D CAM or exported to any of the other CAM solutions. Beyond Direct Edit: Surface and Hybrid Modeling Hybrid modeling allows wireframe, surface and solids to coexist in one useable space. This is where the major CAD programs are heading. But with their structured design process they may not be able to integrate it into their existing products. Dassault may be the first to confront this inadequacy in SW with the introduction of Mechanical Conceptual. This looks like an attempt to incorporate robust direct edit functionality. But I am not sure who will use this package, both of my solutions easily outperform it and at an annual cost of $2988 it does not seem to be cost effective.
