Successfully Navigating the World of Custom Yacht Design with IronCAD Where Mechanical Engineering meets Art! | |
How has Baltic maintained this amazing track record over the years? Part of the answer is their switch to IronCAD — a critical decision made almost 20 years ago.
Baltic 175 Pink Gin – The making of a silver giant The Move to IronCAD
Baltic’s design team had been using 2D CAD since 1988, but their yacht designs were just too intricate to visualize and test in 2D. They required a new system for modeling complex parts and assemblies. In the beginning of 2000, they started their search for 3D software. Based on a referral from a colleague who had seen IRONCAD at an exhibition, they tested IronCAD and found it outperformed all other competitors. IronCAD’s Impact on BalticSince implementing IRONCAD, Baltic has won new business with their yacht designs that would not have been possible with their old 2D system. Baltic Yachts isn’t about building copies of yachts that already exist, rather each one of their yacht designs is unique. The principles of faster, stronger, and lighter govern everything at Baltic but they also emphasize flexibility and make everything custom to meet customer demand. Committed to custom, Baltic designers have found IRONCAD’s Innovative Design feature essential for conceptual modeling. Innovative Design delivers real flexibility by allowing users to directly manipulate the parts independent of history and constraints while maintaining feature design information. By combining IRONCAD’s Innovative Design environment with the platform’s capacity to accommodate a more conventional history-based, structured design environment, Baltic can choose, at an individual part level, which process is most appropriate for a particular yacht design, allowing Baltic engineers to design the way they want. IronCAD as an Interior Design Package I would like to extrapolate on the incredible functionality of IronCAD to do Interior Design. IronCAD was released as Trispectives in 1995, it was one of the first programs to introduce solid modeling on the PC. It was a graphic design package and had a multitude of video and image examples of interior and other non-mechanical engineering projects. Sadly, much of those are gone. Trispectives was purchased by a company that was representing CoCreate, a direct edit only package that is now Creo Direct. They integrated the direct edit with a robust history based system in Trispectives's incredible single model environment thereby creating the first CAD system that was not based on the Pro/e paradigm. That was 21 years ago. When IronCAD was released in 1998 it focused on industrial/mechanical engineering, ignoring its rich graphic design roots. All of the functionality is still there. While the integrated realistic rendering is not up to the standards set by KeyShot, it offers more than enough to enhance the design process. I have looked for examples of interior design and I found this YouTube that gives you the idea. KeyShot is an integrated third party solution. You can do great realistic renderings and animations in IronCAD with just a small bit of training. I consider both of these features as professions that take time to become proficient. But with IronCAD much of it is a push of a button. You can see the effective use of the catalogs to build the product. IronCAD's single model environment, standard and custom catalogs is the very best for fabrication, interior design or any discipline that works with many components from small parts, components that are OEM or custom including interior features They use the IronCAD draw to create the documentation, which is a Autocad clone that is part of IronCAD and is a standalone package and can work directly with both .dwg and .dxf. IronCAD has two documentation modules. Not being familiar with Autocad I have only used the original drawing package. Here are a couple of other article showing IronCAD used as a fabrication tool.
