Phil's ZW3D Corner Exercise One

Let me introduce Phil Procario, Jr.

Awhile ago I got a ZW3D software request from Phil. He was interested in the purchase options. He downloaded ZW3D and within a month he was ready to purchase ZW3D Standard. He was interested in the surfacing capabilities of ZW3D. This was the beginning of a new adventure in 3D CAD.

He appeared to be very knowledgeable about surface modeling.  I designed with surfacing for 8 years in the beginning of CAD and was happy with the introduction of solid modeling. But surfacing was what interested Phil.

Here is one of his early comments about that topic.

"Surfacing in Solidworks is a massive pain, in Inventor and Fusion the current tool set for surfacing is very limited....

Today's CAD apps are based on sketch constrain, sketch constrain...etc. This is just the absolute worst way to work. Feature based modeling is hard to break and easy to fix, plus it is much faster and easier to control. Sketch based modeling is very old school way of modeling and honestly comes from the old time CAD people that just don't want to change with the times and step outside their box. I really don't understand the industries unwillingness to change. Engineering and Design was conceived so that things would evolve and get better yet we are still doing things in CAD the same way they were done a decade ago...."

To be honest I really like what I have seen so far with ZW3D.

The next email he included the above image. Here are a few more.

I was totally blown away. I have never seen anything like this. I instantly knew I was dealing with the very best 3D CAD modeler I have ever seen. I am passionate about 3D CAD and was gushing like a school girl and still am, probably embarrassing Phil. I realized I was dealing with someone incredibly knowledgeable, talented and a graphics design professional.

I asked Phil what he used for rendering:

"Personally, I use IRAY and Unreal Engine4 for rendering, as the countless others out there are not real-time and do not offer the things I need."

I quickly realized Phil was not just some CAD jockey he is also a professional Tool & Die Maker, Designer/Engineer. Being a draftsman, Phil and I have quite a bit in common about standard documentation and manufacturing. So not only will Phil offer tips on modeling but in sharing his 3D knowledge as it pertains to engineering and manufacturing.

Here is another image of Phil’s work:

Phil rented a seat of ZW3D Standard. He instantly went to work. I think I got two support calls. Within a very short time Phil had great handle on ZW3D.

Here is one of his first parts.

Phil soon referred ZW3D to an associate, Peter Doering, that was having a problem with some surfacing. Peter rented a seat of ZW3D and within a couple of days I got this email.

Hi Joe,

Thank you very much!

As it pertains to examples this project is what Phil and I am working on.

 https://rebelrower.com/

The initial hull design was done in Rhino, which for some reason is a standard in the boat industry. The surface already had a few problems!

It was imported into Fusion 360 and I did some of the early concept design work, but when it came to surfacing, I hit road blocks every way I tried it.

At this time Phil was not part of the project, but I suggested to my client that we needed Phil's help.

Phil also hit road blocks in Fusion 360 even using some of his unique re-topologizing workflows and T-Splines.

The rest is history, as they say.

Thanks to ZW3D paired with Phil’s surfacing skills we now have tooling for the hull created.

You should see the images. Perfectly smooth reflections!

Regards,

Peter Doering

Phil proceeded to refer more customers and decided to start his own business with another fellow:

Laser and CNC Creations

Phil was sold on ZW3D. Why?

Like many of us that are passionate about 3D CAD we can’t afford the Alias’s, Catia’s, NX’s and Creo’s. Not only are they overly expensive, they are not designed for the individual with much of their focus on the PLM data management side. The mid-ranged programs like Solidworks and Inventor do not come close to offering the Hybrid modeling that Phil demands.

ZW3D fills the bill, at a price we can all afford.

Phil is very enthused to help spread the use of ZW3D. He has found the existing training is not sufficient to get people up and running and is putting together an effective training program.

So, we will start with Phil’s Corner to introduce this training and many tips on the “Professional" use of ZW3D.

We will be posting new comments and training product offered by Phil in the future. Phil is be working with TECH-NET in representing ZW3D. Feel free to contact Phil directly and he will fill you in on the capabilities of ZW3D mechanical and hybrid modeling.

You can contact Phil directly at phil@tecnetinc.com

For more information or to download a 30 day evaluation of ZW3D
